The TSA wanted 6,000 new officers by summer. Most positions are unfilled as airlines expect a passenger surge.

The Transportation Security Administration is trying to recruit thousands of new officers for airport security as travel resumes after the pandemic. They have hired roughly 2,200 new officers, but are still two-thirds away from their goal of 6,000 new TSA officers by summer 2021, reports Ian Duncan for the Washington Post.

Recent airline passenger levels indicate a larger than expected demand for leisure travel. Roughly 1.5 million people a day are being screened at airports by the TSA. Usual numbers from the summer of 2019 reached 2.5 million people a day.

Hiring is a slow process, then officers must be trained, which takes up to six months.
