Lawyer Gustavo Vila has admitted cheating retired NYPD Officer John Ferreyra out of $900,000 paid to him by the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. He has been disbarred and faces sentencing in February, reports the Associated Press. The men had been friends and Vila was also NYPD before he became an attorney.
Ferreyra, 59, was diagnosed with World Trade Center-related cancer in 2005.
Vila forwarded $100,000 to Ferreyra, keeping the rest, lying to his client and friend.
