USS Somerset hosts National Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer Conference

Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (IW) Molly A. Sonnier, Expeditionary Strike Group 3 Public Affairs reports that the USS Somerset (LPD 25) hosted more than 550 attendees to the National Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer (NEPLO) conference on April 5-6.

The conference showcased  the responsibilities of the amphibious fleet during disaster response. Amphibious units train in order to respond to natural disasters within 72 hours.

Amphibious assault ships like the USS Somerset have great abilities to aid disaster regions. In addition to the ability to produce large amounts of drinkable water, an amphibious assault ship has a hospital, well deck, and flight deck.

USS Somerset is named for the county in which Flight 93 was brought down when its 40 brave crew members and passengers fought back against terrorist hijackers on September 11, 2001.
