U.S. social media firms say they are removing violent content faster

Some of the most prominent social media firms in the United States appeared before a Senate panel this week to discuss the removal of online extremist content. They claim that new technologies help them to remove disturbing content more rapidly.

Senator Richard Blumenthal told David Shepardson of Reuters that social media companies must do more to prevent violent or extemist content from appearing online.

Criticism of social media has increased since the Christchurch shooter who murdered 51 people in March streamed his attack live on Facebook.
