Street in Astoria/Long Island City to be co-named after retired NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez

City Council has approved the co-naming of the southwest corner of 50th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard in Astoria Luis Alvarez Way. Retired NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez was instrumental in permanently extending the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund by making a moving speech to Congress just before entering hospice with his World Trade Center-related cancer.

Detective Alvarez spent more than three months working with the recovery efforts, reports Allie Griffin for Astoria Post.
