Sacred Heart mourns death of student, 9/11 family member, after eating competition

Caitlin Nelson, 20, of Clark, NJ, died on April 2, 2017 after choking three days before during a charity pancake-eating contest. Her father, Port Authority Police Officer James Nelson, was killed during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 at the age of 40. Caitlin was 5 when her father was killed, report Cedar Attanasio and Jim Shay of the CT Post.

Nelson was a social work major at Sacred Heart  University who volunteered widely, including helping survivors of the Newtown shootings and other people who have suffered from trauma.

A vigil for Caitlin Nelson was held Sunday night at the University.
