Retired NYPD Emergency Service Unit cop Paul Johnson dies from 9/11-linked lung disease

Retired NYPD Officer Paul Johnson died on July 22, 2018 of World Trade Center-related pulmonary fibrosis in South Carolina, reports Esha Ray in the Daily News. The retired member of the elite Emergency Services Unit was 60.

He joined the NYPD in 1987 and became a member of ESU Truck 7. He arrived at the site of the World Trade Center as the North Tower collapsed and spent months on the site, digging for remains. He retired in 2003.

Officer Johnson was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2010.

His nine children and 19 grandchildren are among his many mourners.
