Groundbreaking at Long Island park to be renamed after NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez

October 19, 2020 was Luis Alvarez’s 55th birthday.

The retired NYPD Detective never lived to see it, dying just days after testifying before a House Judiciary Committee to persuade them to renew the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund that now bears his name.

Now a park in his hometown, Oceanside, will be named for him too, reports Vanessa Murdock for CBS 2 New York. His widow and brother spent his birthday at Terrell Avenue Park, which will become Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park.
