The former Fresh Kills landfill, once the world’s largest dump, took on tragic significance after the terrorist attacks of 2001 when it became the place where World Trade Center debris was taken and searched after being searched on the site. Now, plans to turn the former landfill into a park are turning into reality, report Anisha Nandi and Ari Mont of CBS News.
A monument to those murdered in the attacks and for the recovery workers who searched for their remains is planned for the new park.
The park is due to be opened in stages, now through 2036.
