Congressional representatives call for probe into claims scammers are trying to steal personal information from 9/11 heroes

Some New York politicians have called for a Federal Trade Commission investigation into the fraudsters attempting to con sick rescue and recovery workers whose illnesses were caused by their work at the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Con artists are calling these brave men and women pretending to be from the Victim Compensation Fund and asking to confirm sensitive information, that could be used for identity theft, report the Associated Press and Dailymail.com.

Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler and Peter King wrote, “It is despicable that this community now needs to worry about being tricked into revealing sensitive personal information that could cause real harm in their lives if the data was used maliciously.”

Any suspicious calls should be reported to the Victim Compensation Fund hotline at 855-885-1555.
