US Marine Chris Merkle avoided all discussions of his three Iraqi and four Afghanistani tours of duty with his therapist. His anger and PTSD were affecting his life. After trying virtual reality-based exposure therapy, he is doing much better and studying psychology to help other veterans.

While there are concerns about the long-term safety of virtual reality and about its effectiveness as a therapy, there are promising signs as well, reports Katie MacBride in Rolling Stone.
