It is probable that discarded smoking material is the cause of a 2014 fire that caused great damage at the Flight 93 National Memorial, according to a new report. Three of four buildings at the former memorial headquarters were destroyed in the blaze, reported the Chicago Tribune on February 6, 2016.
The report lists “8,310 objects and archival materials” as damaged or destroyed in the fire, including items found at the crash site that had connections to the 40 passengers and crew members of United Flight 93. A flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on September 11, 2001 was also lost in the fire.
