FF Ray Pfeifer, who served nearly 28 years with the FDNY, is now retired and suffering from site-related Stage IV kidney cancer that has spread to his brain, bones and elsewhere, still spent months in Washington DC fighting to extend the Zadroga Act wrote Sarah Dorsey in the Chief Leader on January 16, 2016.

His chemotherapy bills alone were $11,000 a month and he often used a wheelchair in Washington, but he continued to lobby for the renewal of Zadroga. Immediately upon his return to New York, Pfeifer entered the hospital for several surgeries.

Pfeifer received the key to the city on January 9 for his work.“I was just the poster boy,” he said.
