The eternal flame at the West Springfield (Massachusetts) September 11th memorial has malfunctioned and has been dark for several months. Crews are working to fix it before the sixteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, writes Conor Berry of Mass Live.com.
The flame burned for all those killed in the attacks, but specifically for Melissa Harrington-Hughes, a West Springfield native who died attending a conference on the 101st floor of the North Tower when terrorists flew American Airlines Flight 11 into it. She was 27.
The eternal flame tops a polished stone monument on the West Springfield Town Common at Park and Elm Streets.
