Retired Navy Vice Admiral John Mateczun, 9/11 Pentagon survivor, dies

Retired US Navy Vice Admiral John Mateczun died on November 7, 2022.

Mateczun was in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, when it was attacked by terrorists. A psychiatrist, he started to assist the injured.

His son, Adam, Mateczun, told Rick Nathanson of the Albuquerque Journal, “We didn’t know if he was dead or alive and it wasn’t until a few hours after the plane had crashed that he finally was able to get in touch with the family to let us know he was still alive.”

Mateczun was also a Vietnam veteran with a long and distinguished career.

Military burial at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a date to be announced.
