Racquetball tournament to raise money for 9/11 memorial

A racquetball tournament tonight and Saturday will raise money to build a 9/11 Memorial Garden on a strip of land between Yarmouth Police Headquarters and Mattacheese Middle School.

The Yarmouth Police Department and Yarmouth Police Relief Association are holding the fourth annual Blue Ball Open at the Cove at Yarmouth Resort, 183 Route 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. More than 110 men and women from around New England and New York will compete.

The memorial garden will be built around a piece of twisted steel from the World Trade Center that the Yarmouth police obtained from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the spring. The beam will be on display during the tournament, along with renderings of plans for the memorial garden.

The tournament is open for public viewing at no cost.

Anyone interested in helping with plans for the memorial garden should contact Officer Albert Sprague, president of the Yarmouth Police Relief Association, at asprague@yarmouth.ma.us or by phone at 508-775-0445, ext. 2136.
