Pay it forward: NYPD leads by example donating kidney to fellow officer and urges New Yorkers to do the same

NYPD Sergeant William Gaspari tried to donate a kidney to Police Officer Tommy Alexander. While he was not a match, through the National Kidney Registry, he donated in Alexander’s behalf, which gave Alexander a voucher for a kidney. Officer Alexander then had a successful kidney transplant.

Both officers were strangers to one another, but they recently met and Dean Moses of AMNY was there.

“I’m happy that I get to meet you after so long…..Once I heard everything went well, well I’ve been dying to meet you. I’m extremely happy,” Gaspari told Alexander.

Alexander responded, “Well you’ve got a friend now!”
