MOSS POINT, Mississippi — For the past seven years, a group of New York firefighters been traveling to the Mississippi coast and Jackson County to deliver truckloads of toys to needy children.

They are en route once again.

The firefighters and their cargo are expected to arrive at the Head Start offices in Moss Point around 11 a.m. Thursday, according to Hannah Donegan with Head Start. They will be escorted by members of the Moss Point and Pascagoula Fire Departments.

“They’ve been coming every year since Katrina,” Donegan said, “even last year after Hurricane Sandy. We told them ‘You don’t have to come. You had your own storm’ and they said ‘we’re coming.'”

Friday, the firefighters will visit with every Head Start class in the area prior to Saturday’s big toy giveaway at the Head Start office at 5343 Jefferson Street in Moss Point. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. — or until the toys run out, whichever comes first, Donegan said. In addition, the firefighters will be assisted by a professional in the toy distribution industry — Santa Claus.
