New technology and vessels helps FDNY save lives on the water

Reporters Amy FreezeĀ and John Sprei of WABC toured some of the FDNY’s high-tech fireboats and found out how the FDNY Marine Unit saves lives on the waters around New York.

During the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the FDNY was still using a fireboat built in 1934. That boat became the only source of water once the World Trade Center towers collapsed, crushing water mains. Astonishing upgrades have been made since the attacks. Now that there is much more activity on New York’s rivers and harbor, the need for skilled water skills is crucial.
