NDA’s Rose Cugno wins Robert Curatolo scholarship

In her essay describing her hero, she named her father, retired police officer Michael A. Cugno, caliing him “Superman.”

“I (am) attending Sacred Heart University and although I am the biggest scaredy-cat, my dad’s courage has given me the power to be able to stand taller when by myself,” she wrote, reports Charlie DeBiase Jr. for the Staten Island Advance.

Robert Curatolo was a Staten Islander and FDNY firefighter was killed while responding to the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Curatolo played varsity baseball at Curtis High School, loved the sport and coached for years.

The scholarship in his honor is awarded annually to a high school senior who also plays baseball or softball and who has a parent or guardian who serves as a NYC firefighter or cop, or a PAPD police officer.
