Marine jet catches fire aboard Norfolk-based USS Kearsarge during takeoff

A Marine AV-8B Harrier jet aboard the USS Kearsarge caught fire after experiencing catastrophic engine failure during takeoff in the Persian Gulf, according to the Navy, writes Brock Vergakis in the March 16, 2016 Virginian-Pilot.

The incident occurred on March 8, 2016 without injuries, though $2 million worth of damage was done.

Harrier jets aboard the Kearsarge began conducting operations in Iraq against the Islamic State in November 2015.

The Kearsarge Amphibious Readiness Group, which includes the USS Arlington, deployed from Norfolk, Virginia in October 2015.
