Leader of foiled plot to bomb New York City subway system sentenced to time served

The ringleader of a 2009 plot to launch a string of rush-hour suicide bombings on New York’s subways, naturalized U.S. citizen Najibullah Zazi, has been sentenced to 10 years, or essentially, time served.

Zazi, 33, assisted authorities after his arrest and says he “unequivocally repudiates radical Islam.”

Federal sentencing guidelines would sentence Zazi to a life sentence, but after his cooperation implicated two of his colleagues in the plot and gave the U.S. authorities invaluable information about al Qaeda, reports WABC.
