Joseph O’Toole, Ground Zero FDNY hero, dead of cancer at 61

FDNY Firefighter Joseph O’Toole, known almost exclusively as “Toolie,” has died of site-related cancer, reports Larry McShane of the New York Daily News.

O’Toole, 61, spent his 19-year FDNY career at Bronx firehouse 41 Truck, and spent 5 months at the World Trade Center site during the recovery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations go to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation.
