John G. Chipura Blood Drive set for Saturday; grateful young recipient to greet donors

The John G. Chipura Blood Drive will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 9:00am until 3:00pm at Staten Island’s Our Lady Help of Christians Church.

This year, donors will be greeted by someone special – John Hudson Dilgen. Dilgen, aged 16, suffers from epidermolysis bullosa (EB), an excruciating skin condition that requires monthly blood transfusions.

”When people donate, it really helps. I thought this would be a good way to work for something that I’m passionate about — something that really helps me, ” he told Ann Marie Barron of the Staten Island Advance.

Firefighter John G. Chipura was an NYPD officer, a U.S. Marine, and an FDNY firefighter. He was killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. and this Saturday the Tottenville blood drive held annually in his memory will have one particularly grateful blood recipient at work.

Details about the drive and how you can donate can be found here.
