Invictus Games 2016 begin in Orlando

Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Charlotte Oliver reports in America’s Navy that the opening ceremonies of the second Invictus Games were held in Orlando, Florida yesterday.

The Invictus Games are an international, multi-sport competition for injured military personnel. The Games were begun by Prince Harry in 2014, who wanted to demonstrate the power of sports to inspire recovery and to demonstrate that there is life beyond their disability. The sports are archery, sitting volleyball, indoor rowing, powerlifting, road cycling, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair basketball, rugby, and tennis.

“Over the next four days, you will hear stories of courage and fortitude told by men and women who refused to use the term ‘I can’t’,” Ken Fisher, chairman of Invictus Games Orlando 2016, said. “You 500 seated in front of me are truly unconquerable, as are the 1,000 family and friends seated next to you.”

Closing ceremonies will be held on May 12. For a schedule of events and other information, please visit their website.
