Hempstead renames Delaware Ave. after 9/11 hero retired FDNY FF John R. Elges

Delaware Avenue in Hempstead will now be called Firefighter John R. Elges Avenue, after the FDNY firefighter who died of World Trade Center-related throat cancer in 2018 after a long fight with the disease.

Firefighter Elges spent his 24-year FDNY career at Ladder 134 in Far Rockaway. He also served as captain of the Long Beach volunteer fire department, writes Tom Carrozza for the Long Island Herald.
