An FDNY helmet lost by a firefighter in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be reunited with its owner, retired Firefighter John Iammatteo, after it spent years in a box in an Alabama house reports Lance Griffin in the Dothan Eagle.
Apparently a worker at the site picked it up and mailed it to a woman in Alabama as a gift for her grandson. The family recently decided to try to find the owner, trying the NYC Mayor’s Office, other politicians and their local fire department .They had no luck until they contacted the NYPD, who were promptly able to find FF Iammatteo, who had moved to Wilmington, NC after retiring.
It seems that neither the family nor the man who took the helmet realized the importance of their helmets to members of the FDNY.
