Fritz Koenig, sculptor whose art withstood 9/11 attack, dies

Fritz Koenig, the German sculptor whose large work, the Sphere, survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, has died at the age of 92 reports PIX Channel 11.The Sphere stood between the towers of the World Trade Center from 1971 until their destruction by terrorists in 2001.

Koenig, sculpted the 25-foot high Sphere beginning in 1967. The task took 4 years. Its original name was “Grosse Kugelkaryatide NY.

The damaged Sphere was moved to Battery Park after its removal from the rubble of the Trade Center. Despite many voices (Koenig’s included) that wanted the Sphere to return to its home on the Plaza, it will be moved to Liberty Park next year.
