Former NYPD officer Elmer Santiago, who received money for his World Trade Center illnesses, is being sued by RD Legal Funding Partners. RDLFP gave Santiago advances on the settlement money and is demanding interest, reports Barbara Ross in the New York Daily News.
RDLFP, one of many controversial financing companies that charge enormous interest fees on settlements, contends that these fees are not loans. Loans are, of course, subject to usury laws that would not allow this kind of profit.
