The Tower of Voices, the newest addition to the Flight 93 National Memorial, has been awarded the Building Information Modeling Award from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s 2020 Design Awards, reports the Altoona Mirror.
Forty different, custom-made windchimes in a tower make up the Tower of Voices. There is one chime for each innocent voice silenced aboard Flight 93 when terrorists hijacked the plane during the attacks of September 11, 2001. The slender, 93-foot-high tower that holds the chimes at different heights is made of precast concrete. Its unusual shape and the need for it to be quite strong caused a number of construction challenges.
