Feds probe $80M construction scandal at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, wrecked on 9/11

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and is in the process of being rebuilt. Construction has been halted by a lack of funds, reports Melissa Klein for the New York Post.

An investigation has been launched into the finances of the project –$15 million are missing. Projected costs for the rebuilding have risen from the original projection of $30 million to the current estimate of $80 million. Millions of dollars in private donations are involved.

Manhattan’s US Attorney’s Office is investigating both the finances of the rebuilding project and those of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
