Exposure to 9/11 disaster tied to low birth weight, preterm delivery

Reuters reports that toxins released during and after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in lower Manhattan may have affected babies who were not even conceived yet. Babies conceived as many as three years after the attacks were more likely to be born early and to be born small.

According to a new study, ratesĀ of preterm delivery and low birthweight babies doubled over the next few years among women who lived or worked near the attack site.
