Eagle Scouts to improve 9/11 memorial and VFW in Montville Township

Gail Bottone The Record

Brandon Wong and Cameron Poole, both Montville High School juniors and aspiring Troop 74 Eagle Scouts, presented their individual Eagle Scout projects to the Montville Township Committee at the meeting on Tuesday, March 24. The Committee accepted both proposals.

Wong is planning to imprive the aesthetics of the 9/11 and Pan Am Flight 103 memorial. He will remove existing mulch, remove the dead shrubs, plant a Japanese thread leaf maple surrounded by vincas and install a new bench on the existing concrete slab. With the help of the Department of Public Works, he will relocate the memorial stone to the front of the memorial.

His estimated date of completion is late spring or early summer.

Poole’s project involves work at VFW Post 5481. He stated that the purpose of his project is to recognize the efforts of veterans and support the community in making the park area attractive to visitors. He plans to mulch and landscape, replace and paint the VFW mailbox that is used to collect flags for proper disposal, and create a VFW sign post similar to that seen on the television show “M*A*S*H*.”

It will tell how many miles to Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, Saigon, Baghdad, and Kabul. Poole also is planning to build a bench and coordinate it with Wong’s bench to provide a pleasant area to sit and enjoy the memorial site. Poole’s estimated date of completion is late spring or early summer.

The Montville Township Public Works Department will help with the tools and supplies for the projects.
