‘Don’t treat terrorists as monsters’: Lindt Café siege survivor’s message to terror experts

On December 15, 2014, Louisa Hope was shot in the Lindt Café terrorist attack in Melbourne. She spoke to 500 anti-terrorism experts at the International Counter Terrorism Forum, reports Brett McLeod of 9 News Australia.

“So often we make people like that [terrorists] out to be a monster. If we choose to paint them like that it’s beyond our capacity to understand, and until we understand, we’re trapped,” she said. She urged participants to concentrate on terrorists’ motives in order to prevent attacks.

The International Counter Terrorism Forum is a three-day conference for members of the “Five Eyes partners” – Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
