The September 11 Memorial Wall of Southern Illinois will begin to be constructed this spring despite the original plan of waiting until enough money was raised to finish construction. $125,000 has been raised towards building costs, but more is needed, writes Wally Spiers in the News-Democrat on January 16, 2016.
The centerpiece of the memorial will be a large piece of World Trade Center steel, 35 feet long and weighing 7,000 pounds. The concept of the memorial is a walkway that will walk visitors through the terrorist attacks of 2001. The memorial committee hopes to dedicate at least phase one of the memorial by September 11, 2016.
