Bonnie Harris, Gander SPCA, remembers Unga, bonobo who landed at Gander in 2001

Bonnie Harris was the manager of the Gander and Area SPCA in 2001. When the small town was inundated by planes and stranded passengers on September 11, 2001, she knew there would be animals aboard the planes. Among the animals were two bonobo chimpanzees who were moving to a new zoo.

Unga, the last of the two bonobos, died last week.

Harris had planned to pay a visit to Unga last spring, but COVID-19 cancelled the trip.

“That was one of the trips I was really looking forward to the most, just going to meet her again,” Harris told Nicholas Mercer of the Central Voice.
