Bellerive’s history will be linked forever to 9/11, even with a new generation of players ushering in

Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis was hosting the WGC-American Express Championship on September 11, 2001. This week, as it hosts the  PGA Championship, many professional golfers shared their memories of the day with Tod Leonard of the Los Angeles Times. This is the first time since the 2008 BMW Championship that many of them have played the course.

On 9/11, play halted when news of the terrorist attacks came through and players watched in the locker rooms. The tournament was then cancelled.

Padraig Harrington told the press, “A journalist asked me a few weeks ago to talk about the golf course. Even what little I remember, I can’t even talk about that, because it all relates to September 11. How can I talk about the golf course when it’s all so insignificant?”
