ME to use emerging genetic technique to identify WTC remains

The New York City Chief Medical Examiner has a new technique to identify human remains. They may be able to use this on World Trade Center remains soon — possibly even by the end of this year.

Next Generation Sequencing, or NGS is already being used by the United States’ military to identify remains hundreds of soldiers from the Vietnam, Korean and World War II.

“I think it is a game changer,” Dr. Timothy McMahon, director of the Department of Defense DNA operations for the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, told Anthony M. DeStefano for Newsday.

NYC’s ME’s Office is being trained in the technique.
