Alice Hoagland, mother of gay Flight 93 hero Mark Bingham, dies

Alice Hoagland, 71, the mother of 9/11 hero Mark Bingham, has died after a long illness.

Mark Bingham was a passenger aboard United Flight 93 who is supposed to be one of those who joined the fight against the hijackers who intended to fly the plane into a building in Washington DC as part of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Mark Bingham was very active in the international gay rugby community, and after his death, Mrs. Hoagland started the Bingham Cup, a biannual tournament. She was a great supporter of Mark’s team, the San Francisco Fog, becoming “rugby mom” to many of the players.

As a former flight attendant, Ms. Hoagland also was active in promoting better airline security after the attacks of 9/11, reports Ed Walsh for The Bay Area Reporter.
