Charlita Cardwell, a Winston-Salem native and survivor of September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, has died

Charlita Cardwell, 46, a survivor of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, has died of pancreatic cancer. She lived near the World Trade Center and left her apartment at the time of the collapses of the towers, reports John Hinton for the Winston-Salem Journal.

“All the symbols of my success, including my furniture and apartment in Battery Park City, are now gone,” Cardwell said at the time to the Winston-Salem Journal. “It’s making me think that perhaps it’s appropriate to re-evaluate my definition of success.”
