A daughter, her father, 9/11 and “The Weight of Dust”

Amy Gaines was 8 years old on September 11, 2001. Her father, a 20-year veteran of the NYPD who was due to retire from the force, came home that night after responding to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He worked at the site for two months.

Scott Gaines was diagnosed with World Trade Center-related tonsil cancer. It spread to his bones and lungs. Scott Gaines died last year.

In The Frontline Dispatch’s latest episode, The Weight of Dust, Amy Gaines combines interviews with her father with doctors, other recovery workers, and people involved with the fight for medical care for the 9/11 sick.

The episode can be heard and an article about it by PBS’ Patrice Taddonio can be read here.
