A new study of September 11th survivors and rescue and recovery workers has shown some specific risk factors that make it more likely that someone exposed to trauma will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or anxiety.
Some of the risk factors include being exposed to traumas in the past, lack of social support, experiencing traumatic symptoms during the trauma itself, and history of alcohol abuse or mental health problems. Women also seem to experience symptoms more often than men.
The new study published in Psychological Trauma contains the most recent findings about the long-term psychological impact of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, reports Romeo Vitelli in Psychology Today.
