Hibernians honor 9/11 hero Lt. Kevin Dowdell, name new division in Breezy

A new Ancient Order of Hibernians division, the Lieutenant Kevin C. Dowdell A.O.H. Division 4, has been established in Breezy Point. It is named for FDNY Lieutenant Kevin Dowdell, who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center nearly seventeen years ago.

Lt. Dowdell was a decorated officer of the elite Rescue 4 unit, and despite his devotion to his wife and two sons, he had no intention of retiring, though he was eligible to retire.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians is an Irish Catholic organization that promotes unity and charity. Eighteen Hibernians were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The new chapter can be contacted here.

The new group has only been established for about 6 months, but already has more than 50 members and counting. Two of the members are his sons – James, who is a member of FDNY Rescue 2, and Patrick, West Point graduate and Afghanistan veteran.

“He was a great man and father and we hope to continue to share his beliefs and values within the community. He meant the world to us and we will never forget him,” James told Matthew O’Connor of The Tablet.
