Social media’s stepped-up crackdown on terrorists still falls short

A new study from the Counter Extremism Project (CEP) has found that, despite recent efforts by Google, Facebook, You Tube, and other internet giants, ISIS videos have still been seen 163,391 times from March 2018 until June 2018, reports Larry Greenemeier in the Scientific American. Many accounts of those responsible for the videos remained online, even after terrorist content was removed.

Some hope was evident in the study, however. You Tube now removes many extremist videos within two hours of their being posted.  The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism now has 13 member companies.

Improvements still need to be made.
