The Huntington Town Board will rename two roads for NYPD Officers Scott Blackshaw and Mark J. Natale, both of whom have died of World Trade Center-related cancers, reports the Long Island News.
At its meeting of June 19 , the Huntington Town Board renamed Iceland Drive in South Huntington “NYPD Officer Mark J. Natale Way” to honor the officer who herded survivors onto ferries and boats on September 11, 2001 and spend months on guard around the World Trade Center for months thereafter. These acts caused the brain cancer that killed him in May of this year.
NYPD Officer Scott Blackshaw will be honored by the renaming of Valleywood Drive in Huntington Station as “NYPD Officer Scott Blackshaw Way / Valleywood Drive.” He spent weeks at the site of the former World Trade Center and died of cancer resulting from that work late this May.
Officer Natale’s family attended the meeting and received a street sign with the new name. A ceremony for the family and friends of Officer Blackshaw will be held this August.
