The 1 train station at Cortlandt Street, which was destroyed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, is scheduled to reopen in October 2018, reports Dan Rivoli for the New York Daily News. Located directly under the World Trade Center, the station was destroyed in the attacks. The tunnel of the 1 train was rebuilt in roughly a year, but the station remained closed as rebuilding went on all around it.
Currently, riders of the 1 train need to walk to Franklin Street or Chambers Street to the north or Rector Street to the south.
MTA construction chief Janno Lieber said of the station, “from a symbolic standpoint, this is the last major piece of infrastructure being built on the World Trade Center site.”
The new station will be decorated with words from the Declaration of Independence and the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
