The Postcards 9/11 Memorial on Staten Island will now add the names of rescue and recovery workers who have died of site-related illnesses since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 to a wall near Postcards, reports Rachel Shapiro in the Staten Island Advance.
Both the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association and the Uniformed Firefighters Association have gathered names of their members who died of World Trade Center-related cancers and other illnesses, and joined Staten Island’s Borough President James Oddo and New York’s Economic Development Corporation to add the names to the marble panels along the St. George esplanade. Names of other recovery workers will be collected from other agencies and unions and will be added to the memorial.
The memorial to the recovery workers was built several years ago, but officials refused to add the names of the fallen because of the difficulties in determining which deaths were attributed to 9/11-related illnesses.
