Gander, a tiny town in Newfoundland, population about 13,000, received 39 planes and about 7,000 guests when the terrorist attacks of 2001 closed all US airspace. Their hospitality and kindness was a bright spot in the blackest of days.
Now they are being thanked with World Trade Center steel, report Ellen Moynihan Larry McShane in theĀ New York Daily News.
A group of firefighters and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation arranged for the gift.
