How steel from the World Trade Center may help to cut vets’ suicide rates

Two veterans, Marine fighter pilot Steve Danyluk and Boone Cutler, who served in Iraq, have created a Spartan sword from steel from the World Trade Center and ask fellow veterans to pledge not to commit suicide using the sword to raise awareness of the suicide problem among returning military personnel.

It is hoped that using the sword to open discussions about suicide will create connections for veterans who miss the cameraderie they experienced while serving and will make talking about suicide more common, reports NPR’s Quil Lawrence.

FDNY firefighters donated the steel for the sword from scraps they had saved after cutting stars of David and crosses for recovery workers and firehouses.
