God and Mammon – St. Joseph’s Chapel in Gateway Plaza faces uncertain future

St. Joseph’s Chapel, the beloved Catholic church that has been in Gateway Plaza for decades faces trebled rent and a new lease that expires in 2018 with no renewal option, writes Matthew Fenton, in the Battery Park Broadsheet.

St. Joseph’s served as a respite center during the recovery efforts after the terrorist attacks, and houses a beautiful September 11th memorial. It is and has long been a fixture of Lower Manhattan.

Community Board 1’s monthly meeting will be held at 6:00pm on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Manhattan Youth Community Center, located at 120 Warren Street (near the corner of West Street).  Anyone wishing to speak about St. Joseph’s Chapel is asked to arrive early to sign up for a speaking slot.
